Adults

There are many opportunities for growth at First Church. Our adult Sunday School program is very strong.

The Adult Bible Class (ABC) taught by Dr. Robert Scheidt, a retired surgeon and respected lay theologian. The class is an in-depth study of scripture, held in the large lecture room on the north-east forner of the first floor of the building. The class is regularly featured, from September through May, on PUTTING CHRIST FIRST, the television program of First United Methodist Church.

The Young Adult Sunday school class is taught by Al Arnold. Church History is the theme at this time.

The Hal Hunt Sunday School Class meets in the fellowship hall in the church basement. The class is taught by Russell Young, and studies the International Bible Study series. The class is predominately mature adults.

The Adult Class is taught by Jana Thompson. The class meets in the conference room on the hallway off the Central Avenue entrance. Study materials for the class vary.

Students

Sunday school provides a Bible study setting for our students in grades 6 – 12. Classes are held in the basement youth area of the church.

At First Church, we are passionate about youth group being a place to give young people opportunities to discover truth, make friends, serve others in meaningful ways, and have fun while doing all of those things! We are passionate about teenagers learning more about who Jesus is and how much He loves them, and prayerfully, they’ll respond to His faithful, unending love with their own love and devotion! Out of this personal relationship with a very intimate Savior, Lord, Friend, and King, we pray that parents and siblings will only be loved and respected more, and that families will be strengthened as a result of the powerful work of God in the lives of youth.

Preschool

The First United Methodist Preschool provides a first class educational, social and spiritual experience for preschoolers from age 3 through pre-kindergarten six year olds. Not only are the children taught, they are also treated with loving care. They enjoy the advantages of our Uptown district Sunday School setting.

Children

Under the direction of Lisa Johnson, Christian Education is a great strength at First Church. The children’s education program is outstanding at every level. The “Uptown District” Sunday school program is very popular with both children and teachers. You can’t imagine how cool our Children’s Sunday School is. It’s probably unlike any you have ever experienced. You have to see it to believe it, so why not stop in some Sunday morning at 9:30 and experience it for yourself? The “Uptown District” is our name for the Workshop Rotation Model Sunday School. Each room is decorated as a building in an “uptown” setting. There is an internet cafe,(Pe@ce.com – where children use computers in learning the lesson); a chapel (Christ Child Chapel, where oral storytelling is the means and audio learning is the style); a library, (St. Paul’s Library – where a reading learning style is promoted and the library is full of interesting books and witten lessons to help reinforce the Bible stories we study); a theater, (Starlight Theater features a 32 seat theater where videos, slide shows, and plays are used to teach students about God through visual learning and popcorn is served); a hardware store, (Joseph and Son Hardware – teachws the Bible lessons with a hands on learning style and crafts help the students relate to the stories they are learning); and a dance/music studio, (Studio One – music and movement are wonderful learning tools as students enjoy singing and dnacing about the lessons they are learning). Students rotate from “building” to “building” each Sunday. Each room features, not only a different “motif” but also a different learning style. Children from kindergarten through fifth grade attend the Uptown District at 9:30 on Sunday mornings.

On Wednesdays the church hosts an after school program called Mustard Seeds for grade school children. The program provides Bible lessons, crafts, games, snacks, and a children’s choir and lots of fun. Mustard Seeds runs September through November and January through March, from 3:30 – 5:00.

Vacation Bible School will be held August 6 – 9 for children ages 3 through grade 5.

Worship

At First Church we believe that all we are, and all we do, begins in worship.  We offer three distinct worship services each Sunday morning.  Whatever style of worship helps you feel the presence of God, you will find a place of comfort at First Church.

Traditional Service

Our 10:45 service follows a traditional form.  The ministers, acolytes and choirs are usually robed.  The music includes traditional hymns and both classical and modern Christian music.  The music is accompanied by pipe organ, piano, and occasionally a brass ensemble or even a small orchestra.  The service features both liturgical acts, such as the doxology and responsive prayers, and informal moments, such as a children’s message.  The traditional service is the most popular service at First Church.

Contemporary Service

Our 9:15 contemporary worship service features contemporary music and a relaxed atmosphere.  There are no robes, hymnals or formalities.  The service is free flowing and inspirational and the Spirit of God is evident.  Worship is lead by our praise band.  The band features Cheri Oechsle on keyboard and lead vocals, Susan Burchfield on bass guitar and vocals, Jacob Brake on rhythm guitar, Matt Oechsle on drums, Diane Thompson on vocals.

Blended Service

Are you an early bird?  Do you want something more laid back than a formal worship service, yet more traditional than contemporary worship?  The 8:00 a.m. informal worship service may be for you.  It is a relaxed informal setting.  The focus is always just where it is in all our services…on our connection to God and one another.
