I grew up more
or less un-churched and it was as an adult that I came to a personal
relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. Since that time I have been
trying to allow God to direct my life. I believe that God is eager to use
us as instruments of his will in our families, churches, careers, and
communities. I pray I am also eager to be used. I was called into ministry in
1985 after seven years of high school teaching and coaching. After receiving a
Master's degree from United Theological Seminary I was ordained a deacon in 1988
and an elder in 1990. I have served churches in Cairo (85-90), Quincy (90-93),
Kenton (93-97), and Portsmouth (97-03), prior to coming to First Church.
My involvement in the wider United Methodist Church has
included the West Ohio School of Ministry Board of Directors, the Lima District
Festival of Sharing Committee Co-chair, the Conference Board of Ordained
Ministry, the Lima District Education Committee Chair, the Portsmouth District
Trustees, the Conference Nominating Committee, the West Ohio Deacons Board, the
Leipsic Lecture Committee, and the West Ohio Evangelical
Fellowship Board of Directors.
Community involvements have included Hardin County
Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors President, Hardin County Ministerial
Association President, Scioto County Ministerial Association, Scioto Christian
Ministries Board of Directors, Southern Ohio Medical Center Ethics Committee,
Van Wert County Ministerial Association President, the Van Wert Community Health
Professionals Advisory Board,
the Board of Van Wert Public Access Television, the Van Wert United Way A&R
Committee, and the
board of the Pregnancy Life Center of Van Wert.
My wife, Becky, and I have been married since 1975.
We have three grown children, Katherine, Dillon, and Karly. We have one
grandchild, Lennon. Becky is a registered nurse and a certified medical
case manager. We are originally from the Lima area and are happy to be living
close to our extended families. I am a sports fan, following local high school
teams, Miami University, and the Ohio professional teams. I am also an avid
reader of non-fiction; particularly history, biography, and theology. Things
that interest me most include hunting, fishing, golf, ballroom dancing, antiques, theater, and
guitar. I am also involved in coaching once again, as an assistant with
the Van Wert varsity football team. I like to be busy.
